In January 2021, the UK will open up immigration pathways to holders of the British National (Overseas) passport--a colonial relic--allowing them to live and work in the UK for 5 years, and then apply for citizenship. This comes as a response to the systematic oppression of civil liberties and freedoms in Hong Kong. The move has reignited interests and discussions of foreign passports among Hongkongers.
It turns out that within the Chinese speaking region, there are as many as 6 commonly held passports. So just how did these passports come about?
