In the neighbourhood of To Kwa Wan, among the dilapidated tenement houses -- or "Tong Lau" as they are locally known, is a storefront like no other. What use to be a butcher shop now houses several community organisations, one of them is Fixing Hong Kong. They are a group of volunteers and renovation workers who came together after the 2014 pro-democracy Umbrella Movement protest, offering free help to residents whose homes require imminent repair work. Through doing so they hope to bring democratic ideas to grassroots citizens -- explaining to them their role in the democratic process, the importance of local community groups, and the inner workings of huge political machines.
